Introduction
Between the buzz and the silence
There is a corner of Bahia where mornings begin with the sound of the sea and the birds, not with traffic. Santa Cruz Cabrália is that place. It was off these beaches that Cabral’s caravels dropped anchor in April 1500, and it was here that Brazil’s first Mass was said. Five centuries later the town is still small, with quiet streets and warm water, and a church on the hilltop looking out over the river.
Cabrália’s secret is its location. To the south lie the axé beach clubs of Porto Seguro, the nightlife of Arraial d’Ajuda and the charm of Trancoso. To the north, after a ten-minute ferry ride, another Bahia begins: Santo André, Guaiú and kilometers of beaches where you barely see a soul. You sleep in silence and decide each morning whether the day will be about partying or nature.
In this guide we have gathered everything we recommend to our own guests: things to do in Santa Cruz Cabrália and the surrounding area, where to eat, itineraries for couples and families and how long each outing takes from Azorai.
Part 1
Santa Cruz Cabrália
Cabrália: where Brazil began
Cabrália is the kind of place you get to know on foot. A square lined with colonial houses, children playing football in the late afternoon, the smell of moqueca drifting from the kitchens. Tourism arrived, but it did not take away the small-town feel, and that is what makes so many people want to come back.

Upper Town · a few minutes from Azorai
The parish church and the lookout over the João de Tiba River
- History
- River views
- Wedding photos
Climb up to the Upper Town in the late afternoon. The parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, from 1630, is one of the oldest in Brazil, and next to it stand the old Town Hall and Jail and a lookout worth the trip: below, the João de Tiba River opens into the sea, the fishing boats head back to port and, on the other side, the green of Santo André stretches as far as the eye can see.
It is a short walk full of history, and one of the most beautiful settings in the region for the photos of a wedding in Bahia.

Down below, the square is the heart of town. Seu Beira-Mar occupies a restored 19th-century mansion and is the most refined table in Cabrália, perfect for a dinner for two. Around it there are pizzerias, burger places and fish and Bahian moqueca restaurants, and Point do Beré and Paralelo 16 are among the best-known addresses.
Praça do Coração hosts the town’s celebrations, from Carnival to New Year’s Eve. They are local, lively parties, good for families, without the crowds of Porto Seguro’s big stages.

- Walks
The small beaches in front of the town center are among the calmest in the region: a few beach shacks, umbrellas on the sand and a calm that holds even in January. At Apuã Beach, known as Turtle Beach, it is common to see them swimming close to the shore.
For a walk, head to Lençóis Beach, a strip of sand that stretches for kilometers, with a stronger sea and hardly anyone around. Go early, when the sun is still low, or late in the afternoon, when the light turns everything golden.

Humpback whales, kitesurfing and the Coroa Alta Marine Park
- Whales
- Kitesurfing and surfing
- Reefs
Between July and October, humpback whales travel up the coast of Bahia to give birth in warm waters, and September is usually the most generous month. Whale-watching boats leave from Porto Seguro, and seeing a humpback leap a few meters from the boat is one of those memories that stay forever.
The steady wind attracts kitesurfers, and Arakakaí and Mogiquiçaba have waves for surfing. For those who prefer to look beneath the surface, the boats that go down the João de Tiba River take you to the Coroa Alta Marine Park, with reefs and natural pools that appear at low tide.

When the children ask for a different kind of day, Fazenda Mãe Tereza has the answer. The ecological park has a lake with a water slide, horseback riding, kayaks, a zip line, Atlantic Forest trails and mud baths, and lunch is at the parrilla, with Uruguayan-style grilled meats.
For those who like dirt roads and a bit of dust, quad bike tours leave from Cabrália and cut inland to the Pataxó villages and Lençóis Beach.

Part 2
Santo André, Guaiú and Belmonte
Across the river: the Bahia that mass tourism has not yet found
It is three or four minutes by car to the ferry and a ten-minute crossing. It does not sound like much, but on the other side of the João de Tiba River the pace changes completely: fewer cars, more coconut palms, wide beaches where you can walk for an hour without meeting anyone.

Santo André · 15 min from Azorai, including the ferry
Santo André, the village where the river meets the sea
- Fishing village
- Boat trips
- Forró
Santo André is a fishing village at the mouth of the João de Tiba, surrounded by mangroves and small sandbanks that appear and disappear with the tide. The most beautiful way to explore it is from the water: by schooner or speedboat, stopping to swim in the river and for a clay bath that leaves your skin soft and guarantees a good laugh.
In 2014 the German national team stayed at Campo Bahia, trained there and left as world champions. The village became famous but stayed low-key: it is a retreat for Brazilian artists and travelers escaping the crowds. In the afternoon, Gaivota and Pier João de Tiba serve fresh fish on the riverbank; at night, forró takes over Flor de Tangerina.

Guaiú · about 30 min, including the ferry
Santo Antônio and Guaiú: river, sea and a slow lunch
- Empty beaches
- River and sea
- Beach shacks
Head north and the beaches get emptier and emptier. In Santo Antônio, Maroca Praia has loungers on the sand and a moqueca worth the trip. In Guaiú, the river runs down to the sea and forms a freshwater lagoon: you can swim in the river in the morning and in the sea in the afternoon, on the same stretch of beach.
Lunch is at Maria Nilza’s beach shack, a local institution, or next door at Elias and Leonice’s, famous for crab pastries and caipirinhas made with biribiri, a tart little local fruit.

Toward Belmonte
Mogiquiçaba and Belmonte: kilometers of wild beach
- Nature
- Surfing
- Cocoa history
After Guaiú the coast becomes a vast, beautiful emptiness: kilometers of undeveloped beach, coconut palms and open sea. In Mogiquiçaba, a turtle nesting area that is good for surfing, Cabana Porto Real is the only beach shack, and it is hard to find a more peaceful place to spend the day.
The road ends in Belmonte, a town that grew rich in the cocoa era, keeps its 19th-century mansions and lies where the Jequitinhonha River meets the Atlantic. It is a long trip, but for lovers of history and the open road it is worth every kilometer.

Heading south
Coroa Vermelha and Porto Seguro: history, Pataxó culture and axé
To the south, Bahia gets livelier. In fifteen minutes you are in Coroa Vermelha, Pataxó indigenous land and site of the First Mass; a little further and you reach Porto Seguro’s North Shore, where axé music plays from morning to night.

The First Mass, the Caminho de Moisés and Pataxó culture
- History
- Indigenous culture
- Shallow water
A large cross marks the spot where, on 26 April 1500, Friar Henrique de Coimbra celebrated Brazil’s first Mass. Around it lies Pataxó indigenous land, with the crafts market and villages open to visitors, such as Aldeia Pataxó Nova Coroa, where you can watch the dances and walk a trail with community guides.
At low tide the sea pulls back to reveal the Caminho de Moisés, a strip of sand reaching out into the sea between pools of warm, shallow water. It is the favorite beach of families with young children. And it is the real Bahia: busy, cheerful, with street vendors, music and beach shacks side by side.

Also on the North Shore, the Memorial da Epopeia do Descobrimento has a life-size caravel you can go inside, an outing children talk about for the rest of the trip. Downtown Porto Seguro has the Historic Town, the Passarela da Cultura and all the shops of a larger city.

Arraial d’Ajuda, Trancoso and Caraíva: a day, a night or two

By day, the family program is Arraial d’Ajuda Eco Parque, a fantastic water park with slides and pools by the sea. At night Arraial transforms: Rua do Mucugê fills with bars, restaurants and little shops, and the season’s parties go on until dawn.
On the beach, Corujão sets the afternoon to samba and bossa nova, and on Sundays Cabana do Sting plays rock on the sand.

The Quadrado in Trancoso looks like a film set: a long lawn, colorful little houses on both sides and, at the end, the small Church of São João Batista facing the sea. At night the little houses light up and turn into restaurants and shops.
Nearby, Praia do Espelho always ranks among the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, with natural pools at low tide. And for golfers, Terravista Golf Course, named Brazil’s best golf course at the World Golf Awards 2022, has 18 holes between the Atlantic Forest and the sea, about 1 h 30 from Azorai.

- Forró
- River and sea
At the southern end of the Discovery Coast, Caraíva feels like another era: sandy streets, no cars and a river you cross by canoe to reach the village. It is too far for a day trip, and that is exactly why it is worth staying: one or two nights to swim where the river meets the sea and dance forró until late.
